Penzance is "The
Gateway to Penwith".
On the south coast Newlyn formed an art colony
from 1873 with the residency of J. Henry Martin. On the north, the
Atlantic coast colony of St. Ives formed following J. M. Whistler’s
visit in 1883. What drew artists here in the past was the light and the colour that
created form and which continues to draw artists today.
Fine art painting is
a tradition able to absorb the past, the present and provide a vision of
the future. The work the penzance art gallery represents is an expression of that tradition reaffirming
the influence of the area upon contemporary British painting.
